Australian Coal Industry

Australia remains one of the world’s leading coal exporters: In 2023, Australia was again the No. 1 exporter of metallurgical coal (by almost 4-fold to Russia at No. 2 and the USA closely at No. 3), and the No. 2 exporter of thermal coal. Over the next few years, Australian export of metallurgical coal is projected to grow from a base of 161 Mt in 2023-24 to 175 Mt in 2028-29, and thermal coal export is expected to hold steady at between 205 Mt and 210 Mt, an increase of between 2.5% and 5% from predictions at the same time last year1.
