At BOYD, we as mining consultants understand the importance of complying with complex environmental rules and regulations while managing an efficient and economical mining operation. We know the environmental risks and impacts of mining and the means for mitigating them.

Our consulting group offers professional and technical environmental engineering services to help balance the economic and environmental demands of the mining industry. Our continuous environmental related involvement with these mining issues keeps us current with regulatory changes and innovative mining industry practices.

Property assessments and operation compliance studies by our environmental group are a key component at BOYD's integrated due diligence investigations for mining acquisitions and mergers.

As a premier mining consultant, our demonstrated environmental consulting capability and extensive regulatory expertise enable us to offer timely and economical solutions to maintain environmental compliance and avoid exposure to environmental mining risks.

Example Projects Include:

  • Determined environmental compliance and liability associated with underground coal mining and processing facilities located in Illinois. Assessed compliance with air, water, and land use permit requirements and estimated final mine closure cost. Evaluated environmental exposure related to acid mine drainage, surface subsidence, and solid waste/hazardous material management.

  • Conducted an environmental survey of a 6-million-ton-per-year open-pit taconite mine and pelletizing facility in Minnesota. Inspected the site and reviewed records to address compliance and liability associated with mining and reclamation, atmospheric emissions, water usage and discharges, solid and hazardous waste, tailings basin integrity, asbestos, PCB management, storage tanks spill prevention and control, blasting, and employee health and safety.

  • Assessed current environmental and reclamation liabilities identified at an operating surface mine located in Illinois. Reviewed available source data relating to historical reclamation costs, environmental practices, current and projected mine operation, and regulatory compliance. Conducted field inspections and interviews with company personnel responsible for environmental compliance.

  • Prepared coal refuse disposal permit application for a site in southwestern Pennsylvania. The disposal area encompasses 88 acres providing 12 to 15 years of operating capacity for the company’s preparation plant. Work efforts included subsidence investigation of the proposed disposal site, analysis of site geology and hydrology, soil sampling, delineation of surface and mineral ownership, design of disposal site, stability analysis, design of erosion and sediment control structures, development of surface and groundwater monitoring plans, and reclamation plans.

  • Provided training and information to Romanian Government officials on environmental permitting, reclamation guarantees, coal leasing, tax and royalty issues. Reviewed and recommended revisions in Romanian mining and environmental laws.

  • Prepared engineering plans and cost estimates to reclaim final pits and perform other required closure activities for three dragline multiple-seam lignite-mining operations in Texas. Estimates covered the cost of backfilling, grading, revegetation, structure removal, monitoring, and administration.
