Australian Coal Industry

Australia remains one of the world’s leading coal exporters: In 2024 (and according to projected figures for 2025), Australia was again the No. 1 exporter of metallurgical coal (ahead of Mongolia, the USA, and Russia), and the No. 2 exporter of thermal coal, behind Indonesia. Over the next two years, Australian exports of metallurgical coal are projected to range between 158 Mt and 169 Mt, and thermal coal exports are expected to range between 203 Mt and 201 Mt.1.
